CHURCH HISTORY

The history of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church (PMBC) reflects our commitment to God, family, and the community.

CHURCH BEGINNING

Starting with the desire of a couple to worship within their community. Richard and Eddie M. Hollins held the first meeting of PMBC in their home on November 29, 1946. The couple implemented a plan to raise funds and purchase land with the assistance of Reverend A. R. Thomas, Reverend L. H. Newsome, and several others. After the purchase of several lots extending from 2323 Powers Avenue to Woodrow Wilson Avenue and the erection of a building, the doors of PMBC opened on April 22, 1947, with Reverend L. H. Newsome as the Pastor.

EARLY GROWTH

As the membership grew, auxiliaries and other events took place within the ministry such as the 1st Women’s Day service and an ongoing radio broadcast on Sunday evenings. Through a committed effort, PMBC was able to withstand the difficulties of ministry including the burning of the building which resulted in not only restructuring the sanctuary. but also, addition of a fellowship hall which allowed the ministry to expand its service and commitment to the community.

Transitional Growth

Growth took place not only in membership but also in the transition of leadership. Reverend A. L. Barnes became pastor in 1968, leaving in 1970 to establish his own ministry. Pastor O. B. Burgess then led the congregation as a meek and humble man with the deepest appreciation of the Gospel. Pastor Burgess resigned in 1971, which led to the election of Reverend C. S. Anthony as Pastor. God continued to add to the church with the addition of our weekly Bible Class taught by Reverend M. B. Buckley. Pastor Anthony served at Progressive until his health began to fail and weakened him.

Growth Through Ministry

In 1987. Reverend C. E. Stanton became Pastor and implemented several ministries during his pastoral leadership, such as the Church Orientation and Evangelism Ministry. Reverend Stanton organized the Church By-Laws, 1st Annual Church Picnic, and 1st Youth Trip. He obtained land behind the church and ordained 3 Deacons. The church membership continued to grow.

Progressing Forward

We transitioned once again, and Reverend J. F. Johnson became Pastor in May 1994. During his leadership, we held our first Sunday School Seminar and Christian Education Leadership School in which Progressive continues to participate. Under Reverend Johnson's leadership, 126 members joined the church and 32 were baptized. Bible Class was implemented every 1st & 3rd Sunday.

Let Love Abide

Pastor Johnson was an advocate for helping people in time of need. When the bombing in Oklahoma City occurred. he suggested that the Church send a donation to help aid the families. Once again, the building underwent renovations, including the renaming and dedication of the L. H. Newsome Fellowship Hall. Our church motto became “Let Love Abide” based on John 13:35 and this we continue today even after his resignation in 1998.
